Title: Laughter is the best medicine!
Post by: Deb on March 21, 2020, 10:38:41 AM
When I was a kid my mother subscribed to the magazine Reader's Digest. As a child, my favorite section was Laughter is the Best Medicine and to this day that phrase sticks in my mind.

Last week Sena thought of adding a topic here about some of the sillier things people are doing to combat the virus. I've been seeing some hysterical memes. I love seeing those because while the virus is real in this reality, we need to lighten up a little and balance out the negative stuff we're bombarded with right now. I'd love if you would contribute, it doesn't have to be related to the virus but that's a bonus since there are some myths and flat out nonsense (such as people being afraid to buy Chinese or Italian food here in the US).

According to Psychology Today: (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/200504/laughter-the-best-medicine)

Laughter, it's said, is the best medicine. And there's lots of evidence that laughter does lots of good things for us.
It reduces pain and allows us to tolerate discomfort.
It reduces blood sugar levels, increasing glucose tolerance in diabetics and nondiabetics alike.

There's a lot more detailed information on the physical (heart) and mental health benefits of laughter in the PT article.

I'll start things off with this video about responsible :) hand washing.

Hi Deb,

That's really funny, Deb.  I love it.  :)

I wonder if that poor guy is still in that restroom somewhere. Maybe someone should go looking for him?  :)

I too, always liked the Reader Digest magazine when I was growing up (my parents got them regularly) and particularly the "Laughter is the Best Medicine" section.

Here are some funny memes, I just couldn't resist. Then I'll give it a rest, I'm doing seed starts today. I'm really looking forward to getting the garden together in a couple of months. Almost all the snow had melted here and then Thursday we got 12", which made me want to grow something even more.

OK I've been wanting to share this, wasn't sure how, but apparently you don't have to be logged into Facebook to watch this video. It's about aggressive chickens, and I find it extremely funny. I have chickens and love them. I only had a (possibly transgender, long story) rooster for a short period of time, and he was more gentle and loving than my hens. But roosters can be aggressive and apparently it's all about attitude. @narvik2 ...

Hopefully you all can watch this. You may need to turn on sound (next to time on the player).

Hi Deb,

Thanks for sharing that Deb, it was really great.  Who needs a watchdog with those chickens around.  :)

That chicken and duck skirmish was funny too since they both can be pretty aggressive sometimes.

Thanks for sharing that.   :)

OK I saw this one today and thought it was hysterical. I love how creative people are!

It also struck me funny because I bought a paint by number on Amazon last week, an extremely complex but beautiful design. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. I felt it would be similar to doing a jigsaw puzzle. I'll probably open the box when it finally arrives, and decide to frame it as is, without the paint. :)

Hi Deb,

That's really creative.

When I first saw the small picture, I couldn't tell exactly what medium was being used for the horse and the rest of the image on the table. At first I thought that someone was doing a "foodie" thing where they were using ground beef for the horse, light green lettuce for the grass and dark green lettuce for the forest in the background.

Then when I enlarged the image, I saw that the image on the table consisted of the puzzle pieces themselves.  That's very creative, I love it.

Then that pure "bread" dog. That was really funny.

I guess from this that pure bread dog's have square shaped heads???   :)

Thanks for sharing those, Deb.

Hi All,

My wife came across this funny one liner today and so I thought that I'd share it here. Someone was commenting upon how much handwashing and such that they are doing now, given this coronavirus situation. Here's the one-liner.

"My body has been exposed to so much soap and cleansing lately that whenever I pee, it automatically cleans the toilet."

Episode 2 of Some Good News with John Krasinski

Thank you, I love this guy. As of today, almost 10 million views of this episode, 1.59 subscribers. It restores my faith in humanity, in that they are NOT only interested in negative and sensationalized news.

One thing that's a pet peeve for me is masks. I have seen too many articles, Nextdoor topics and videos on how to make your own mask, or make them for medical professionals. Call me a nerd for my need for facts, but masks made from tee shirts or two layers of cotton fabric or single layer jerseys are pretty much useless. From what I've read, virus particles are so minuscule that real protection from the virus would require something like the N95 mask. So why are nurses telling people to make and donate masks from household fabrics? Using coffee filters? Or the US surgeon general showing people how to make a "face covering" from a cotton bandana? Eeeeeek.

I feel something like this (attachment) would be more effective than any DIY project I've seen so far.

Here's a quote from an article on https://www.unknowncountry.com/ (https://www.unknowncountry.com/): "It's not a decision to try to protect [one] from getting coronavirus," according to CDC director Robert Redfield. "It's to help modify spreading. And there is scientific data to show that when you aerosolized virus through a cloth barrier, you have a reduction in the amount of virus that gets through the other side."

Hi Deb,

I kind of wonder about that too. My thinking is that maybe these other people are thinking that since the really good masks are in short supply, doing almost anything is better than nothing.

I think that this mask issue is sort of like the reverse of this ping pong ball video, where in the latter part of the video, the one ball thrown in, doesn't hit any other widely spaced mouse traps (which represent the weave of a face mask made from a regular cotton bandana) because the weave of the material is to large to catch many individual very tiny virus particles.

On the other hand, I do think that this video does give us an interesting analogy of the effects of social distancing.

I realize that it will cut down on spray if someone coughs or sneezes, but there are some people who think a cotton or paper mask will prevent them from being exposed to the virus. I've heard people (people that I know) say that "since the virus is not airborne..." and "I brought food to the fire dept today and gave all the FFs a hug. It's ok I was wearing gloves and a paper mask." I'd feel better if the people (in my area) would put up that caveat in your quote when they offer to sell people their homemade masks (@ $10 a pop!). I feel that it's dangerous that they don't, because people may feel the masks will protect them and they might feel safe and follow proper protocols. Not everyone reads the news.

But they don't, and lately I'm finding a lot of people don't understand a lot of things about basic hygiene. Such as people are buying baby wipes for their hands and think they'll be effective for killing the virus. Or some hand sanitizers will kill bacteria, but not viruses, and they don't read labels. Sorry, just me being nerdy.

I've seen a lot of blue gloves all over the place too. People come out of the grocery stores with gloves on and then just throw them on the ground when they get all their goodies in the car. I imagine this all has been really tough on people who work at grocery stores. I'd like to thank them somehow, in a way that does not include hugs. :)

I put this meme up on another post the other day, but I thought I'd share it here too. It's not funny, but I found it uplifting.

Hi Deb, Hi All,

On the other hand Deb, (and please don't take this wrong, I'm being a devils advocate here) maybe their "beliefs" will keep them safe.

Didn't Seth tell Jane and Rob that if they believed that they should go to the doctors, then they should. It being the belief that was really important.

Yes, you've got a point there. :) Today I was also thinking of those people who lose their life savings to email and phone scams, especially the naive elderly, who tend to trust and believe what people tell them. I wonder how that fits in with Seth?

I will try to amuse and entertain you now.   :)

I fell asleep last night while reading a Seth book, and eating a certain Tex-Mex delicacy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nachos

and then I dreamed
that I found unpublished Seth books.
3 of them.
a trilogy.
they were called:
The Nacho of Personal Reality
The Nacho of the Psyche
and
The Individual and the Nacho of Mass Events

I was thinking about Seth's concept that everything
has
consciousness.
hmmmmmmm
ok, then I thought about couscous.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Couscous

and I noticed how similar the words consciousness and couscous are.
and I thought about how if its true that
everything has consciousness,
then couscous must have consciousness too!!   :)

next, I wondered what would happen if I took a couscous,
and somehow separated it,
into 2 separate cous's.
what then would be the result?
would each cous have its own individual consciousness?
would they be cous-ins? (owwww, sorry, I just couldn't resist).
but back to the highly serious deep thoughts (thank you Jack Handy).  :)

does couscous only exist in nature, in pairs?
like the oxygen atom? it exists as O2 molecules.

does one couscous particle ever feel self conscious?
or perhaps self-couscous, instead?

and how much cous could a couscous cous, if a couscous could cous cous?

ah yes, fine thoughts to ponder on this cold spring night.

and last thought for the night (promise).
I fell asleep reading a Seth book and eating a savory dish of Italian origin:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza

and I dreamed about peace.

and I visualized world peace.

and I dreamed about Seth saying man will not end war, by hating war, but by loving peace.

and I dreamed about a peaceful world
where people lived in peace
and ate pizza in peace.
I visualized world pizza too!!

From Ron Card on Facebook today. @Sena, more education on medicine in America. :)

Quote from: Ron CardA public service announcement from your American doctor, the Medical Mafia, Big Pharma and the health care insurance industry.

Dear valued customer, you simply don't know how much your money and your life savings mean to us.
Please understand our position, and that is that a cured, healthy patient means lost profit for us.

Instead, we've put our heads together, cleverly developing cute-named, lab-created drugs and chemicals with awful harmful side-effects, like death, in order to maintain and long-term manage your doctor-diagnosed and exaggerated disease so we can enjoy job security, while keeping our offices, labs, hospitals and pill factories operating at full capacity.

Why, our colorful and deceptive TV ads effectively suggest that you look for and mentally attract a physical malady so we can treat you.

Again, we enjoy keeping you on the medical treadmill so your money keeps flowing into our pockets. We love your money more that your health.

A sensible, alternative view.

What if, just what if, people started to magically become healthy in growing numbers, becoming healthy because they learned that they create their own reality, their own health reality, done so according to their beliefs, intents, attitudes and expectations, and that they do so, individually, and all together, collectively-speaking, as a healthy mindset and beliefs translates into healthy minds, bodies and spirits.

un-health and disease are not good for the spirit unless it teaches the spirit not to be un-healthy and diseased. -- ron

Thanks for the SGN!

If anyone has extra time to read useless but funny stuff, despair.com has some great uninspiring posters that are always good for laugh. They look like those inspirational posters hanging in offices, but the messages are very different. https://despair.com/collections/posters  "Wishes" has always been a favorite of mine: "When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteor hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteorite."

OK, this won't make you laugh, but it's amazing and really touching. I saw this video a while back, and then someone sent it to me today. It's a horse in France that is a "comfort" horse, it's taken to nursing homes and hospitals to interact with people. He apparently chooses which rooms to visit. I wasn't sure about this, but a little research turned up other videos of him, lots of articles, even a Ted Talk that's in French.

Thanks for the update! I love this guy.

Glad so see that despite all the craziness going on right now, life goes on and people find creative solutions to still carry through with plans and celebrations. These people will never forget how the virus affected their lives—and it's not all bad either. I've never seen The Office, but I thought that was amazing what the cast did. Certainly memorable for this young couple.

I'd put this up on the forum very early on... a Cosmic Seth comic. I made it extra large so the type could be read, so unless you're full screen you'll have to use the scroll bar across the bottom.

Just another opportunity for "Seth" to remind us that we make our own reality, and we just don't get it.  ;D

Hard to imagine brain freeze, it was just a tiny lick of ice cream on the tongue. Maybe the flavor? Could have been something like peppermint... It was pretty wild.

Wow, what a story! Guess they won't be exploding any more whales, seemed like they could have thought that out a little more. Loved the song!

As long as we're being kinda off-color, we have a few odd festivals here in Colorado, and these came about long before weed was legal here, if you know what I mean.

One is Frozen Dead Guy Days. Some old guy died 30 years ago and wanted to be kept frozen, so was kept on ice in a shed in Nederland by family. It was a bit of a controversy when I first moved here. The town of Nederland started the festival in his honor and as a way to celebrate the end of winter. https://frozendeadguydays.org/aboutfdgd

Then there's the Coffin Races & Festival in Manitou Springs, inspired by a woman who had been buried on a hillside in 1891. Her coffin was spit out of the hillside due to heavy rains in 1929, and it came racing down the mountain, and was later discovered by some kids. http://www.emmacrawfordfestival.com/

This is one I find disturbing, Mike the Headless Chicken Festival in Fruita. Yes, Mike was a headless chicken who lived for 18 months after he lost his head. Graphic Alert: Not for the squeamish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_the_Headless_Chicken

An entertaining story about an eccentric business man named Timothy Dexter [1747-1806] who, despite receiving and implementing terrible business advice, managed to succeed over and over. Foresight, extraordinary luck, or a stellar belief system?

Dexter was an eccentric businessman who had very little schooling and was "nearly illiterate." He was working as a farm laborer at the age of 8. As an adult, he managed to marry a rich widow.

He bought large amounts of Continental currency that was worthless at the time. After the Revolutionary war was over, the government bought its notes back at 1% face value and the state of Massachusetts paid its own notes at face value. He became a very wealthy man. He purchased ships and began an expert business to the West Indies and Europe. Excerpts from the Wiki:

"Because he was largely uneducated, his business sense was considered peculiar. He was advised to send warming pans (used to heat sheets in the cold New England winters) for sale to the West Indies, a tropical area. This advice was a deliberate ploy by other businessmen to get him bankrupted. His [ship] captain sold them as ladles for the local molasses industry and made a good profit.

"Next, Dexter sent wool mittens to the same place, where Asian merchants bought them for export to Siberia.

"People jokingly told him to "ship coal to Newcastle." He did so during a miners' strike at the time, and his cargo was sold at a premium.

"At another time, practical jokers told him he could make money shipping gloves to the South Sea Islands. His ships arrived there in time to sell the gloves to Portuguese boats on their way to China.

"He exported Bibles to the East Indies and stray cats to Caribbean islands and again made a profit: Eastern missionaries were in need of the Bibles and the Caribbean welcomed a solution to rat infestation."

And finally: "At age 50, Dexter authored A Pickle for the Knowing Ones or Plain Truth in a Homespun Dress, in which he complained about politicians, the clergy, and his wife. The book contained 8,847 words and 33,864 letters, but without punctuation and seemingly random capitalization. Dexter initially handed his book out for free, but it became popular and was reprinted eight times.

"In the second edition, Dexter added an extra page which consisted of 13 lines of punctuation marks with the instructions that readers could distribute them as they pleased."

There are some issues with the Wiki article that need to be researched, but there are enough stories out there about him. Here's an excellent article about him, worth reading: https://priceonomics.com/the-strange-life-of-lord-timothy-dexter/, with more details than the Wiki. For example:

"When Dexter purchased several large ships and announced his intentions to launch a business in international trade, his fed-up neighbors reportedly seized the opportunity to provide him with horrible investment ventures, in the hopes that he'd bankrupt himself and be forced to move.

One of these neighbors recommended that Dexter sell warming pans (wide, flat brass pans with long handles used for warming beds in the 18th century) in the West Indies (a European colonial territory known for its year-round hot weather). The trusting Dexter purchased no less than 42,000 of the pans, dispersed them in nine shipping vessels, and set off to sell them -- his actions, all the while, eliciting thunderous laughter from experienced traders. But it was Dexter who got the last chuckle: when he arrived and found no need for warming devices, he rebranded them as ladles and sold them to sugar and molasses plantation owners. The demand was so great that each owner clamored to buy at least three or four; Dexter marked up the pans by 79%, and returned with an even greater fortune."

Lol. Reminds me of John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles selling shower curtain rings as earrings, etc. Another classic.

Hi All,

Here's a funny story I recently came across,

As a singer I sing at many funerals & I was recently asked by a funeral director to play & sing at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery out in the country. As I was not familiar with the area, I got lost. I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I sang like I've never played before for this homeless man.

As I sang & played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my keyboard and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I've never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years." Apparently, I'm still lost...

Hi Deb,

Yeah. I too liked Weird Al's versions of Michael Jacksons songs.

So many any of his songs (Weird Al's) are so witty. Like the one you posted on Grammar, which was always my worse subject in school. Mostly because I hated it.

I got real familiar with it in college though.  At the University of Florida, my Freshman English Professor was a Rhodes Scholar and each week he had us write a 500 word paper, where it was given a failed grade if there were two spelling errors or two grammatical errors.

This was 1976, pre-computer days, when papers were written in cursive writing using ink and paper.

I went through a lot of paper and learned a lot about Grammar that term. :)

I agree, ironically, the meme is also largely true.

Those were great! I especially liked the Buddist hot dog, the Descartes one, lol. That one could probably fit in with the other topic about belief vs. knowing. :)

So I looked at @Michael Sternbach's web link, and see he does Tarot readings. I thought he (and the rest of you) would get a kick out of my Tarot deck. I don't read them generally, I just bought them because I thought they were as clever as all get out. With a sort of domestic goddess/Betty Crocker theme. The box looks like a recipe box, and the divider cards have recipes on them for things like "Divinated Eggs" and "Madam Marlena's Mystical Martini."   ;D

Funny you should ask that... it would probably be somehow similar to the Seth analog clock, where every hour simply says "now." :)

There was a Seth card deck years ago, but I think it was more about quotes rather than Tarot. Ron Card (a person on Facebook who has a Seth group and owns much of the Seth/Jane artifacts such as ouija board, Kennedy rocker, coffee table, iconic painting of Seth by Rob) told me a few years ago he was working on a set of cards himself, but it seems it has not progressed. Just recently I was in touch with Mary Dillman and we talked about cards. It motivated me to maybe design a deck, artwork inspired by Seth quotes, similar to what Abraham Hicks produced. Just for fun. I may just start and see where it goes.

Do you think a Seth Tarot deck would be popular? Or more so a deck of quotes that a person could pick at random? Just curious. Maybe I should start a poll...

Adding a photo from Venice, Italy, 2013. I thought it was funny. Dozens of monks were all on board for a canal ride via gondolas. It may be hard to see, but I was there and saw what was going on and thought "Huh? Don't monks take a vow of poverty?" Every one of them had either a nice 35mm camera, iPad or smart phone and were snapping pictures like nobody's business. All grinning from ear to ear. I guess even monks need a "get away from it all" vacation.

;D

I would much prefer a deck with art work over one only presenting quotes. Even though there would be nothing wrong with combining the two.

And yes, I think such a deck could be immensely popular if designed by the right person. Honestly, I couldn't think of anybody better suited for this job than you!  :)

I was thinking of an actual Tarot deck, though, with all 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana, but dedicated to Seth's metaphysical universe somehow.

Well, I'll play around with the idea of a Seth deck, although there are some difficulties involved, the biggest one being the prohibitive production cost and financial commitment/investment. Then there's Laurel owning the copyrights to all things Seth. And of course an enormous amount of time to produce the art... and I'm probably the slowest artist on the planet, lol.

I used to have a set of A-Hick's Law of Attraction cards (https://www.amazon.com/Law-Attraction-Cards-Esther-Hicks/dp/1401918727). I loved their vibrant illustrations.

Hi All,

Unless it's a signed first edition. Even then that's still a pretty hefty price tag. Kinda wish I would have my copy, that I got when it first came out!

Now that's a great price, I think I'll get two of then;

Well I think you should grab it, there's a second one listed for $987.25. Shipping is just $3.99.

The cheaper one is listed as New, the more expensive as Used - Good. Not collector's items or signed. I've seen this a lot on Amazon, not only with books, and no one really knows what's behind the strangely exorbitant prices. There have been some conspiracy theories on FB, people think it's related to human trafficking (some sort of secret code—just Google Wayfair trafficking). To me it's just one of those mysteries of life. :)

Sometimes you can find the older editions as Used on Amazon (not normally for these prices), and eBay often has old Jane/Seth books too.

Hi All,

Hi Deb, I just wish I still had my copy to sell if they really are going for that much :)
Not sure why, I just didn't resonate with that book much. Maybe if I re-read it today I would appreciate it more.

OK, we listened to the amazing cover of Bohemian Rapsody (https://speakingofseth.com/index.php?topic=1927.msg15558#msg15558) back in May. I just came across this Muppet cover. Not as brilliant, but entertaining. And a real sing along (see attached photo of one of my chickens today. And yes, she's sitting on a patio chair.). And with 96 Million views! Well, ok, it's been around for a while. And who doesn't love the Muppets?

Hi All,

I came across an email the other day that contained the message below.

6 allowed at Thanksgiving but 30 allowed at a funeral.

I will be holding a "funeral" for my pet turkey, who will pass away on November, 26, 2020. Refreshments provided.

OK, during "normal" times this would not strike me as funny, but when I saw this article I had to shake my head and snort a little.

In addition to causing "maskne" and skin infections on the face and around the mouth, persistent coughing, "mask mouth," and respiratory illnesses including lung infections, it turns out that most everyone infected with COVID-19 "always" wore masks, according to a newly published study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

I'm not sure I believe self-reports of people who claimed that they "always" wear face masks. A significant percentage also said that they went to restaurants and bars, so obviously, they didn't always wear face masks. A significant percentage were also in close contact with Covid-positive family members, friends, or co-workers. I would think it would be still a high risk even with a mask while sharing the same interior space for long periods of time with a Covid-positive person.

And yet it was good enough for the CDC to publish a report.

My son told me he went to a party 4 weeks ago with a bunch of 20 somethings. Turns out the hostess had covid. The partygoers shared shot glasses, joints, god knows what else. No one got sick.

I don't know what to believe at this point. Do you?

Two words about whether or not to wear a mask: White House

The White House is currently in its third wave of Covid-19 within its walls, steeped in a culture that makes fun of people who wear masks. I'm not making a political statement. It was the president who made mask-wearing a political issue, so I think it's fair game in any discussion about masks. After former New Jersey governor Chris Christie got the virus following one of the White House super-spreader events, he said that he had been "stupid" for not wearing a mask. Herman Cain died from the virus after attending a Trump rally without a mask and after ridiculing those who wear a mask.

Again, I mistrust self-reports, especially when it would be embarrassing to admit otherwise. Masks are not by any means a 100% effective barrier. Many of those patients reported living with or working with people with the virus or going to restaurants or bars, all of which are high-risk situations, and you can't wear a mask "all the time" when in restaurants or bars.

Telephone Tribute
a True Story by Paul Villard

This is not a funny story, but I thought it was touching, and a great example of what Seth said in my favorite quote, and also of how strangers can positively touch each others' lives in ways they don't even realize.

Quote from: Seth (https://speakingofseth.com/index.php?msg=38#msg38)
The smile that you give can be given in no other way. You can smile as an individual in a way that no other human being, dead or alive, can smile. And the touch of your hand can change a life in a way that no other individual, alive or dead, could change that life. You act upon those that you know and those that you do not know in ways that no other individual can ever act.

Quote from: Telephone Tribute

a True Story by Paul Villard

When I was quite young, my family had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember well the polished oak case fastened to the wall on the lower stair landing. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I even remembered the number - 105. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked into it. Once she lifted me up to speak to my father, who was away on business. Magic! Then I discovered that somewhere inside that wonderful device lived an amazing person -- her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing that she did not know. My mother could ask her for anybody's number and when our clock ran down, Information Please immediately supplied the correct time.

My first personal experience with this genie-in-the-receiver came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the toolbench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible, but there didn't seem to be of much use crying because there was no one home to offer sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing. Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver and held it to my ear. "Information Please," I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two, and a small clear voice spoke into my ear. "Information." "I hurt my fingerrr-" I wailed into the phone. The tears came readily enough now that I had an audience. "Isn't your mother home?" came the question. "Nobody's at home but me," I blubbered. "Are you bleeding?". "No", I replied. "I hit it with the hammer and it hurts". "Can you open your icebox?" she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a little piece of ice and hold it on your finger. That will stop the hurt. Be careful when you use the ice pick," she admonished. "And don't cry. You'll be alright".

After that, I called Information Please for everything. I asked for help with my Geography and she told me where Philadelphia was, and the Orinco--the romantic river I was going to explore when I grew up. She helped me with my Arithmetic, and she told me that a pet chipmunk--I had caught him in the park just that day before--would eat fruits and nuts. And there was the time that Petey, our pet canary, died. I called Information Please and told her the sad story. She listened, then said the usual things grown-up say to soothe a child. But I was unconsoled. Why was it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to whole families, only to end as a heap of feathers feet up, on the bottom of a cage? She must have sensed my deep concern, for she quietly said, "Paul, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow, I felt better.

Another day I was at the telephone. "Information," said the now familiar voice. "How do you spell fix?". F-I-X." At that instant my sister, who took unholy joy in scaring me, jumped off the stairs at me with a banshee shriek--"Yaaaaaaaaaa!" I fell off the stool, pulling the receiver out of the box by its roots. We were both terrified--Information Please was no longer there, and I was not at all sure that I hadn't hurt her when I pulled the receiver out. Minutes later, there was a man on the porch. "I'm a telephone repairman. I was working down the street and the operator said there might be some trouble at this number." He reached for the receiver in my hand. "What happened?" I told him. "Well, we can fix that in a minute or two." He opened the telephone box exposing a maze of wires and coils, and fiddled for a while with the end of the receiver cord, tightened things with a small screwdriver. He jiggled the hook up and down a few times, then spoke into the phone. "Hi, this is Pete. Everything's under control at 105. The kid's sister scared him and he pulled the cord out of the box." He hung up, smiled, gave me a pat on the head and walked out the door.

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. Then, when I was nine years old, we moved across he country to Boston--and I missed my mentor acutely. Information Please belonged in that old wooden box back at home, and I somehow never thought if trying the tall, skinny new phone that sat on the small table in the hall. Yet, as I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversation never really left me; often in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had when I know that I could call Information Please and get the right answer. I appreciated now how very patient, understanding and kind she was to have wasted her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way back to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about half an hour between plan connections, and I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister who lived there now, happily mellowed by marriage and motherhood. Then, really without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information Please." Miraculously, I heard again the small, clear voice that I know so well:"Information." I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you tell me, please, how to spell the word 'fix'?" There was a long pause. Then came the softly spoken answer. "I guess," said Information Please, "that your finger must have healed by now." I laughed. "So it's really still you. I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during all that time...." "I wonder," she replied, "if you know how much you meant to me? I never had any children, and I used to look forward to your calls. Silly, wasn't it?" It didn't seem silly, but I didn't say so. Instead I told her how often I had thought of her over the years, and I asked if I could call her again when I come back to visit my sister when the semester was over. "Please do. Just ask for Sally." "Goodbye Sally." It sounded strange for Information Please to have a name. "If I run into any chipmunks, I'll tell them to eat fruits and nuts." "Do that," she said. "And I expect one of these days you'll be off for the Orinoco. Well, good-bye."

Just three months later, I was back again at the Seattle airport. A different voice answered, "Information," and I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?" "Yes," I said. "An old friend." "Then I'm sorry to have to tell you. Sally had only been working part-time in the last few years because she was ill. She died five weeks ago." But before I could hung up, she said, "Wait a minute. Did you say your name was Villard?" "Yes." "Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down." "What was it?" I asked, almost knowing in advance what it would be. "Here it is, I'll read it--'Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean'"

I thanked her and hung up. I did know what Sally meant.

Hi All,

For all you Mandalorian and Star Wars fans I saw this the other day and thought it was funny in a very cute sort of way.  There is now a "Baby Yoda" Cocktail. The other day on "Today" they posted the following:

As Season 2 of the Disney+ hit show loomed, Michael Young, co-owner of the Vault Wood Fired Pizza in Banbridge, Northern Ireland, says he wanted to create something that would pay tribute to what just may be the cutest thing on television.

Enter the Vault's Baby Yoda Cocktail, a combination of vodka, muddled kiwi, fresh lime, demerara syrup and bitters, garnished with lime wedge "ears" and a burlap wrap that transform a simple martini glass into a tiny, drinkable Baby Yoda.

Below is an image of this cocktail.

Hi Deb, Hi All,

OK, here's some background information on "Baby Yoda".

If you remember, in the Star Wars movie, "Return of the Jedi", fairly early on in the movie, Luke and Princess Leia are on Jedda the Hut's ship, which is located directly over a giant sand worm on the planet, Tatoonie. Jedda plans to kill people off by forcing them off a pirate type of plank, where they'll fall into the giant sand worm's mouth.

In this scene, Luke goes all "Jedi Knight" and ends up killing Jedda the Hut and a bunch of the bad guys. One of these bad guys was a man who was seemingly encased in a metal rocket suit. This man, who attacked Luke was named "Jango Fet" and Jango Fet, I believe was a member of the "Mandaloriens".

In the Star Wars movies, the "Mandaloriens" were not discussed very much. However, apparently they were a group of people, similar to Jango Fet, who were a fierce warrior group who also wear heavily armored rocket suits.

There is a new Disney streaming service, Disney Plus or Disney+, and this new service has a new "Star Wars" TV show on its service called "The Mandalorien".

On this new show, the main character, Mondo, a Mandalorien does some bounty hunter type of work to make ends meet. One of these jobs that he takes on, is to go, capture and return a very specific being that these powerful (and maybe evil) people want him to capture and return to them.

This being turns out to be a member of Yoda's race.  This being isn't Yoda himself however and it's just a baby.  Maybe just 10 inches tall.  Since nobody seems to know the name of this baby, everyone refers to it as "Baby Yoda" and Baby Yoda is really cute. Everyone seems to love him and he's a really big thing on the internet this year.

Here are some images of Baby Yoda, in the show, "The Mandaloriean" from Google.

Hi All,

Wow. This is like "Where's Waldow." How many errors can you find in the "Star Wars" story that I wrote about, above.

I've spotted 2 at least.

1) It was Boba Fett, not Jango Fet.

2) It was "Jabba the Hutt", not Jedda the Hut".  Wow, I'm surprised that I didn't write,  "Attila the Hut". :)

That made me laugh because I thought it was Jabba the Hut and then thought I'd just been wrong all these years. And I didn't remember a Boba, but my memory is not that sharp anyway.

I loved the Baby Yoda things, my favorite being the mask: "too close you are."  ;D

If George Carlin was around today, this would be his shtick on Coronavirus. I can totally relate to his story of swimming in sewage. Back in the 70s I used to water ski in the Hudson, near the Tappan Zee bridge. We would see what we called sh*t slicks on the river, and avoided them. It was a wonderful teaching aid—I quickly learned to stay UP on the skis and not fall over. I survived. I have a really healthy immune system due to my childhood. Lol.

George Carlin was brilliant. I remember his shtick on religion. Again, brilliant. I love his irreverence. Really, people need to lighten up. Comics can get away with stuff no one else can these days.

I came across this channel several years ago. A young woman, pretending to be drunk, on her cooking channel. Cute.

"All food that involves cheese is an excuse to eat cheese." That one stuck with me, lol. Then she gets poetic about it. And her problem with the microwave timer—let's just say, I've been there. :)

Hi Deb, Hi All,

Wow. These photographs of bored bookstore employees are really awesome.

When I saw these photos yesterday, I was reminded of a similar image that I saw somewhere in one of my books. For the last day or so, I've been racking my brain, trying to figure out where, and in which book, I saw a similar image.  Today I finally found it.

I have a hardbound book called "Great Events of the 20th Century", by Readers Digest. This book has a Copyright of 1977. In this book, on page 190, they have an image of an easel located inside a house, by an outside window, with a painting on it. The painting is an exact replica of the image found outside the window.

Attached is a crude pixilated jpeg file of this image. A better view of this image called, "The Human Condition", can be found at:

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=the+human+condition+rene+magritte&form=HDRSC2&first=1&tsc=ImageHoverTitle

In this book, the caption underneath this image seems to suggest that this artist, Rene' Magritte, had an almost "Sethian" concept in mind when he painted this picture. Especially, in regards to what Seth has to say about the nature of reality, Framework 1 and Framework 2.  Below is the caption located under this image, in this book.

Belgian surrealist Rene' Magritte, wrote of his painting "The Human Condition" (1933): "In front of a window... I placed a picture representing exactly that part of the landscape which was masked by the picture. In this way the tree represented in the picture hid the tree standing behind it, outside the room. For the spectator the tree was at one and the same time in the room – in the picture – and, by inference, outside the room – the real landscape.   This is how we see the world; we see it outside ourselves and yet we have only a representation of it within us.

Hi All,

In regards to the image in the previous post, the artist, Rene' Magritte says the following.

"This is how we see the world; we see it outside ourselves and yet we have only a representation of it within us."

Given what Seth has to say about the "camouflage" reality of Framework 1, and the true inner reality of Framework 2, I would say this differently. I would say this instead.

This is how we see the world; we see it outside ourselves and yet its true reality exists and resides within us.

I meant to respond to the Magritte post a while ago, got sidetracked. That painting is amazing, he's an artist I really loved and forgot about! Very deep quote from him regarding the painting, sounds very Seth-like too.

In the spirit of art, here are some fun stagings of famous paintings. Some are more serious, others more just for fun.

There's a Magritte in there too.
