Title: Partial Quotes and Full Quotes
Post by: Deb on February 19, 2015, 06:21:58 PM
Partial quotes: To the right of a post title is a “Quote Entire Post (or highlight some text for a PARTIAL quote)” link. You can use this to make just make a partial quote from a post by highlighting the text you want to use and then click the “Quote” link. It will pull together the author’s name, a link to the original post and the date it was posted and put the selected text in a quote box. You can do this for as many partial quotes as you want. It’s helpful when you’re quoting something from an older post or across boards or topics, as it will allow others to click on the quote to go to the original post.

Important: The quoted text will be put into the Quick Reply box at the bottom of the page and you will not have access to the Save a Draft button yet. Once you click Preview, your post will be moved up to the standard message box, with the Save as Draft button below it.

To quote an entire post (not advisable unless it's fairly short), don't highlight any text, just click the "Quote" link.

This is what a linked quote looks like:

-There are several settings in your Profile to customize your forum experience, it's worth a look.

Deb, I have little experience with posting - so you have a question for a simple thing like this :) How do I quote several sentences from different places in one post - so that I could reply in one long post to a few author's remarks.

I tried holding Ctrl, but it didn't work.  If my question is unclear, look at your reply to my Blandings post. There you have 3 of my quotes - neatly in one reply. This is what I tried to achieve.

Thanks!

It's easy! Really.

This is what I do:

I go to a SoS post. I highlight a few words, a sentence, or a paragraph (your choice), and then click on (at the top of the post being quoted), "Quote Entire Post (or highlight some text for a PARTIAL quote)." It will make the highlighted text into a partial quote in the Quick-Reply box at the bottom of the page. I can do that several times with separate words and each time it will make the newly highlighted text into a separate quote. Then I can add my responses to the quotes in the Quick-Reply box, click Preview, and then make any changes I want. Just know that once you click Preview, the Quote option is no longer available.

Thanks Deb! I followed your advise and I think it is working! I'll try it when I need to use this feature next time :)
