“The self tries to solve a particular problem. In so doing, it may end up with a physical difficulty. The physical difficulty is meant to remind the personality of the inner problem behind it. The difficulty will be cleared up when the inner problem is.

“Now, if instead, a drug is used to camouflage the ailment or, in your terms, to heal it, to cure it, to get rid of it, the inner self is in a quandary, for it knows the problem has not been solved, though the symptom has disappeared.

“The drug used to cure the body MAY now - MAY in many instances, obscure the problem and confuse both the body and the mind. Another ailment must be taken therefore that will symbolically and quite practically materialize the problem in your reality. So the patient will get another ailment.

“If this ailment is also obscured or ‘cured’ through the drug, whatever it may be, then the inner self is in a further quandary, and it will continue to try to materialize the problem so that it can be solved. The communication between the mental, psychic, and physical portions of the being can, in such instances, become obscured.

“Now, that does not always apply, for someone with a severe difficulty, believing in the effectiveness of your doctors, may be given a wonder drug and believe in it so that when the symptoms are completely annihilated, he is convinced of the fact of an inner help, and therefore feels secure enough to SOLVE his inner problem. In such a case, however, he has effectively used the drug to heal his mind and his body. The drug has not done it.

“This does not mean that you cannot take advantage of such drugs. It DOES mean that when you do, you are operating within a framework of reality that still, to some extent, divides you from the reality of your own being.”

I wonder what kind of “problem” Seth is referring to? It could be a false belief, e.g. a religious belief.

When Jane was trying to understand the meaning of her illness (rheumatoid arthritis), she came up with the idea of the “sinful self”, an idea that had been drummed into her during her stay in a Roman Catholic orphanage. She refers to the sinful self in her book, “The Way Toward Health (A Seth Book)”:

“In actuality, the combination of  a philosophical stress upon discipline, physical and mental, with the belief in the sinful self, often brings about the most unfortunate human dilemmas. These ideas ride along with feelings that power is desirable but dangerous. To abstain from sexuality then means to store up one’s own power. People with such beliefs often have severe problems with constipation…..”

That's what I'm thinking. Any sort of inner turmoil that's not being faced works its way to the surface, like a splinter.

Wow, what a GREAT topic the "sinful self" is! I can see this as being a huge can of worms and the crux of many, many problems. Illness has been looked at as a metaphor for internal conflict for a while now. I wonder if the illness is always such a good indicator of the problem... such as in the last part of the quote below from your link. Louise Hay's Heal Your Body shows probable cause for rheumatoid arthritis: "Deep criticism of authority. Feeling very put upon." I always thought Jane's RA came from guilt over her feelings towards her mother and her mother's RA—and of course her religious upbringing teaching guilt and punishment until people become self-regulating.

Boy, throw in the Placebo Effect (power of the mind) and a few spontaneous recoveries and near-death experiences of terminally ill people and you've got some real food for thought.

June 5, 1984 The Way Toward Health, some quotes:

Most churches preach a dogma that stresses concepts of the sinful self, and sees man as a creature contaminated by original sin even before birth.

In this dogma man needs to apologize for his birth, and the conditions of life are seen as a punishment set by God upon his erring creatures.

Amid such a conglomeration of negative suppositions, the idea of a good and innocent inner self seems almost scandalous. To encourage expression of that self appears foolhardy, for it seems only too clear that if the lid of consciousness were opened, so to speak, all kinds of inner demons and enraged impulses would rush forth.

It is quite frequent for persons with those beliefs to discipline their bodies overmuch, take positions as police guards, or set themselves up in one way or another in control of their fellows.

Many of their health problems will deal with eruptions—interior ulcers, skin eruptions, or in very definite mental and emotional eruptions, and great outbursts of force and temper all the more noticeable because of the unusual disciplined patterns of behavior.

I'd rather hang out with demons than religious types any day of the week. They tend to be less judgemental.
