Self hypnosis?

I frequently see references to self hypnosis in the Seth material.  Is that a real thing?  Has anyone here ever used self hypnosis successfully?  Are there any books or resources recommended?  I have somewhat of an understanding of what it is, but no real idea if it's beneficial or how to do it or know if I'm doing it right, etc...

I read somewhere that when one is driving a car, one is in a state of self-hypnosis.

This does NOT mean that you should listen to hypnosis audios while driving.

Maybe when driving down an open, relatively empty highway.  My state of mind while driving in traffic around here would be described somewhat differently. ;D

usmaak, I think you are correct.
I just added sometimg to my previous post:
"This does NOT mean that you should listen to hypnosis audios while driving."

As far as disclaimers go, this is better than most ;)

Hi usmaak, Hi All,

Yes, it is a real thing.  There are many books that have been written about it.
Check out the Amazon link below.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=self+hypnosis&crid=2YFGH3010E8Z&sprefix=self+hy%2Caps%2C257&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_7

You can also read about it in the Wikipedia link below

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-hypnosis

In this wiki link above, they mention Emile Coue. Seth mentions him either directly or indirectly via Rob's notes in NOPR, Ch 4, S623 and in NOME, Ch 6, S835.

hi usmaak,

i just saw this post...

i've been using forms of self-hypnosis off and on for the last, wow - 8 years now. mostly i use it to, for lack of a better way to put it, reprogram my mind. i.e., get rid of my bad beliefs. and at least i believe it's been very successful for me.

a little background on it, so you know where i'm coming from and what i've used it for - and how i've used it. then you can figure out if it's something that resonates for you.

8 years ago i went to a hypnotherapist for general stuff. stress at work, lack of self worth, not believing in myself, that kind of 'stuff'. really, after reading the seth material for 12 or 13 years what i really wanted was to change my beliefs/expectations/etc. correct or not, i believe if i change my beliefs, i change my life. simple.

i did 4 sessions with the hypnotherapist, but what i really felt helped me the most was - on the first visit she gave me a simple script for self-hypnosis that i used every morning on my commute to work. my memory of it was very basic:

start by counting down inside my head "5, 4, 3, 2, 1 - deep hypnotic sleep"
then focus on the new beliefs i wanted to establish, with all the associated feelings, and as if i was already there (for me, mostly it was to leave my job and write full time, along with being more calm, believing in myself, etc...)
then once i was done, count back up "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - completely awake and in a non-suggestible state")

and that was it. 20 minutes every morning and then sometimes on weekends.

now, the four hypnosis sessions i'm sure loosened me up and did whatever they did, but i just had the sense that it was the self-hypnosis that i kept doing for those 3, 4, 5 months that i think really did the trick.

exactly 6 months after my first hypnotherapy session, i quit my job and my wife and i moved to the coast of oregon so i could focus and write full time. :) and that's a whole other adventure.

but after that i drifted on the self-hypnosis and didn't do it for a few years. then three years ago i rediscovered dr. joe dispenza through his book, breaking the habit of being yourself (a great title, and exactly what the book is about). i'll spare you the long explanation of him, but at the core of what he teaches is using meditation to - reprogram your brain. but at its essence, and he even said it once in a lecture, it's self-hypnosis. which is simply calming yourself down through what's called an induction (it can take many forms/scripts, my original one was 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 - deep hypnotic sleep) which helps you access your subconscious, where it's easier to actually change those beliefs.

but what dispenza did, was turn it into a very repeatable technique that you can continue to do for as long as you want. at least that's how i use it. he has other focuses for what he does with the meditation, but i just use it to change my beliefs.

i currently meditate over an hour every morning, and the continued effects of that have been amazing for me. i've worked on my beliefs for self-love, believing in myself, trusting myself, etc. now - beliefs are funny things. just when i think i've gotten rid of one, or rather - taught myself to focus instead on the beliefs that i want... i'll still get some flare-ups that just take me down into some bad places - again. what a pain in the butt. :) but i can say that those dips are fewer and more far between, and i am a very different person from where i was 8 years ago, and 3. i am much more calm, i love myself a hell of a lot more, trust myself a lot more, believe in myself more, and if money is of any interest, things on that side have also really changed for my wife and i.

so yeah, i feel it's been successful for me.

i didn't mean to go on for so long, but it seemed that a more full explanation of what my experience was may help you understand if it's something that you'd be interested in. and within the context of seth, the whole idea of a technique that actually has worked for me, to change my beliefs? it's totally worth it.

there are books. dispenza's breaking the habit, for me, was awesome. the first half was him walking through his explanations of why and how it works (the meditations) to help you change your mind and thoughts/beliefs. then the second half is walking you through, step by step, of what the meditation is (but when he says meditation, just think of it as self-hypnosis, couched in a meditation). for me, this process, was the very practical approach to belief change that i felt was missing from the seth material. my belief change took off powerfully when i started this meditation process.

from there, there's a great book (a little dated for me, but some really great practical information in it, including different induction scripts you can use) called "self hypnosis and other mind-expanding techniques" by charles tebbetts. the title is tragically hip for the 70's when it was originally written, but like i say it's got some great info in there, and tebbetts was a pretty well known hypnotherapist at that time, at least from what i can tell checking up on him.

now the disclaimer that i probably should have put way up at the top - i'm not a hypnotherapist. i'm a regular guy, trying to follow seth, and change my beliefs. and i have. and because of it i'm changing my life. and i'll get up again tomorrow morning and do it all again. because for me it's worked.

if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask and i'll let you know any more of what i can.

all my best,

michael
